How Dutch universities assess
Short teaching blocks, a 1–10 grading scale and a binding first-year study advice make the Dutch system distinctive. Here is how to work with it.
The 1–10 scale and the 5.5 pass
Dutch universities grade from 1 to 10. A 5.5 is the minimum pass, a 7 is a solid result, an 8 is very good, and 9s and 10s are rare. Students used to percentage marks are often surprised that a 7.5 is a strong grade. We aim each assignment at the criteria in your course manual rather than at a number.
Teaching blocks and the BSA
Most Dutch universities divide the year into short teaching periods of around eight weeks, each ending in exams or deliverables. In the first year, the binding study advice (bindend studieadvies, BSA) requires you to earn a minimum share of your 60 ECTS credits to continue, and the threshold varies by university and programme. With little slack in the calendar, falling behind on one paper affects the next, so we help you plan deliverables across the whole block.
Research universities and hogescholen
Research universities such as UvA, Leiden, Utrecht, Erasmus and TU Delft emphasise theory, research methods and academic argument. Universities of applied sciences (hogescholen) assess through practice-based reports, advisory reports and internship assignments, and Maastricht University teaches through problem-based learning in small tutorial groups. We adapt structure and tone to the type of institution you attend.
APA and the scriptie
APA 7th edition is the default in most Dutch social science, psychology and business programmes, with IEEE or discipline-specific styles in engineering. The bachelor's or master's thesis (scriptie) is closely supervised and assessed on research design, analysis and academic writing. We support each stage, from the research proposal to the final edit.
